Live like you ride...uncaged!
        Pastor David Middendorf

David A. Middendorf

David Allen Middendorf was born in Nashville, Tennessee, has been in the Church of the Nazarene since infancy and attended Trevecca Nazarene College in the early seventies. In 1973 David moved to Burlington North Carolina where he eventually met his wife, best friend, and gift from the Lord, Sharon. Married for 22 years David and Sharon have been blessed with two children, Anna and Jason. Anna and husband Jin live in Raleigh North Carolina and have two boys, Nevyn and Bryce. Jason is single and lives in Kernersville, North Carolina. David is a licensed Pastor in the Church of the Nazarene and is currently seeking a degree in Pastoral Ministry from Nazarene Bible College.

David has been active in church leadership since the age of sixteen, and has served with many godly Pastors. He has taught children, youth, and adults in Sunday School classes, was involved in three building programs, been on five Work and Witness projects. David served as the Worship Leader and Minister of Music at Power Line Nazarene in Elon, NC for eleven years. In this role he led worship, directed choirs, praise groups, orchestras, and praise bands, and has written and produced Easter and Christmas cantatas.

In October of 2001 David attended a Church Growth Conference in Grove City, Ohio. His purpose for attending was to strengthen his abilities in leading worship. During a break in sessions, he met and spoke with Pastor Steve Combs about a small group ministry to bikers. He also spoke with several other pastors about other ministries, then continued with his worship sessions, finished the conference, and returned home. During the trip home and for the next weeks, David could not get the biker ministry out of his thoughts. He began to sense that the Lord was calling him toward this ministry for the Burlington, Elon area. David says, “To be honest I fought it for a while. I began to pray that if this was what the Lord wanted me to do, that He would give me direction in this area. He did, and on December 26, 2001 I resigned my position as Worship Leader/Music Director at Power Line to devote my full attention to Biker Ministries.”

History of Uncaged Biker Ministries

On September 22, 2002, the First Annual Uncaged Biker Sunday was held at Power Line Nazarene and Uncaged Biker Ministries was introduced to the area. That first Biker Sunday saw about 34 bikers attend the morning worship service. Several bikers new to the church rededicated their lives in that service and one found the Lord anew after not being in a church for over 25 years. 76 bikes and 101 bikers enjoyed a ride, and fellowship following the ride that afternoon.

In the weeks following the first Biker Sunday a weekly Biker Bible Study began in a garage. Attendance averaged between 6 and 10 each week. During one study several of the bikers were testifying to God’s grace and the peace they had found through knowing the Lord. One of the bikers in attendance that night said, “I don’t have what you guys are talking about”. When asked if he would like to have it, he responded, “yes”. David recalls, “We gathered around and led him to a relationship with the Lord right there in my garage, surrounded by lawnmowers, weed eaters, and motorcycle parts. I knew then, this ministry was a call on my life and was going to make an impact on the church and this community.”

Uncaged Biker Ministries began to be recognized in the biker community and respected for the stand they took against the normal bar hopping rides that had been the mainstay of events. The rides began to grow in size and the impact of the ministry began to draw bikers together who were uncomfortable in the bar hopping rides.

The second annual Biker Sunday and Blessing of the Bikes was held on September 26, 2003. That year the numbers grew to 176 bikes, 235 riders and over 500 in the morning worship service. 45 bikers made their way to the alter that morning to find the Lord. Praise His name! What a great day it was. It was hard to tell which group was impacted the most that day, Power Line Church, or the bikers. It was an absolute love feast between a church and those who had never been loved by a church before. The bikers were amazed at the church and the church was amazed at the bikers. Everyone was amazed by what the Holy Spirit did that day.

What does Uncaged mean?

Several years ago two very good friends and I stopped at a Harley-Davidson Dealership in Ohio just to look. When we pulled up we saw a sign that said, “Bikes Only, No Cages”

Sam and I didn’t have a clue, Skip said, “Cars and trucks are cages ‘cause they have you surrounded by metal and glass, bikes don’t. You’re free on a bike.”

On the way out Sam said, “I guess when you’re on a bike you’re uncaged.” That became the name of this Biker Ministry.

When you’re on a bike you’re uncaged, free from what closes you in and cuts you off. You’re able to feel the wind, sense the speed, and know the freedom that comes with rolling back on the throttle in a long sweeping curve.

When you know Christ as your Savior and friend, you are uncaged to experience life as He intended for it to be experienced; wide open, all out, rolling back on the throttle, full of grace. Uncaged Through Christ.

Skip has a full understanding of that freedom now. What it means to be Uncaged Through Christ. This website is dedicated to our memories of him on that day.
